Ready Player One: Film Poster Research

Film Poster Research

LESSON ONE

Before a film is released there is usually a huge marketing campaign which absorbs most a film's budget.

For Example: Ready Player One was made on a production budget of $175 million, with about $150 million more spent on global marketing costs, the film needed to gross at least $440 million in order to break-even.

TASK:
1. Print out the image above of the Ready Player One poster.
2. Stick this into your book in the middle of your page.
3. Use the following headings to analyse the poster making sure you explain each choice the marketing team have made.

- Text (title, tagline, dates, actors etc.)
- Use of image (what is it?, positioning of actors, facial expression etc.)
- Colour (what colours are used and why?)
- Hints at story (is it obvious who is the protagonist/antagonist? Is the story hinted at?)

NEXT STEP: Complete the same task for the following poster.

EXTENSION: Explain the differences and similarities between the two posters.
- Why do you think the marketing team created these two differing posters?

LESSON TWO

TASK: Research the action/adventure genre.

1. Open a new Powerpoint or Word document and collect at least 20 different marketing posters for films within the action/adventure genre.
2. These should be a mix between Main Posters and Teaser Posters (see examples below).
