Making Media: Creating a Radio Show

You are going to create your own radio programme. You may be able to record the audio and then edit it together using a free audio software called audacity if we have time at the end.

TASK 1: Designing your programme.

Before you come up with your programme you need to decide the following; answer the following questions in your book before writing it up in neat on the back of your Radio booklet.

1. Who are your target audience are you producing it for? 
- This needs to be specific and well thought out as it will impact on what content you will be producing.

2. Which Radio Station will it be played on?
- This, again, needs to be well thought out - research radio stations to see which is the best fit for your idea.

3. What time will it be on?
- When will your audience be most likely to tune in and listen to it.

Once you know what audience and station you want to produce it for, start coming up with ideas for a programme.

TASK 2: Create a mind-map in your books of all your ideas for a programme. Go into as much detail as you can. Below are some ideas to get you started...

- Music (genre: R&B, Heavy Metal etc.)

- Radio Play (fictional radio drama)

- Informative (debate a subject or topic)

- Audience interaction (create an interactive game)

- News programme
- Interviews
- Sports
- Competitions

For each of your ideas think of as many specific ideas as you can, for example:

Music > New Music > Dua Lipa > Introducing Dua Lipa's new song > Discussion

 > Interview

TASK 3: Script your programme content.

Below is an example Radio Script.



Look at the example radio script below and answer the following questions.​




1. What features can you identify? (at least 5)​

2. How is the script set out? (You will need to set your draft out in the same way)​

3. What is the topic, who are the audience and what is the purpose of the show? 
4. How do you know this from the script? ​

Challenge: Evaluate the script. How successful do you think it is? What could be 
improved? What ideas from this could you use in

Now you are going to write your script for your programme. Think carefully about your structure as you'll want your audience to know what is going to be on the programme and you will want to entice them to keep listening by tempting them with content.

• Think about:​
• What is your show about? ​
• What segments of the show will you include?​
• Will you have an interview section? If so who are you interviewing?​
• How are you appealing to your target audience?​
• How will you ensure listeners stay tuned in?

- You can either write this in your books or create this on a word processor and it should look like the example below.

TASK 3: As this will be an assessed piece of work the following needs to be produced.

1. Create your Own Radio Show Profile
2. Write your Script for your Show
3. Creating a profile of your target audience for your show which demonstrates what your audience are interested in
4. Create a presenter profile for your show which demonstrates how they match both the station and the audience.
5. Create a playlist for your show (songs for music show, interviewees and topics for talk radio)
6. Schedule your own show (choosing where in the schedule their show should appear and why)
7. Create a website for their show containing all of the above.

STEPS 1-6 need to be input into a WORD DOCUMENT until you have had your Website creation lesson.

STEP ONE: Creating your own radio show profile

Ensure that you have clearly explained on the back cover of your Radio Booklet what your radio show is going to feature, who it is made for and how are you going to appeal to that particular audience using the codes and conventions or radio.

*This needs to be typed up, in neat, onto a Word Document ready to upload onto your website.

STEP TWO: Write your Radio Script (see above)

STEP THREE: Create your audience profile for your Radio Station. CLICK HERE to see BBC Radio One's Audience Profile.

On a word document you need to decide on and explain the audience for your Radio Show in relation to the following:
- Age
- Gender
- Class
- Interests

*This needs to be typed up, in neat, onto a Word Document ready to upload onto your website.

STEP FOUR: Create a presenter profile.

For this task you will need to write an introductory profile for your Radio Show. This can be fictional but must match the needs of your audience. You will need to explain how this presenter suits the show by including biographical information that will link with the sort of content that the show is putting out there.

*This needs to be typed up, in neat, onto a Word Document ready to upload onto your website.

STEP FIVE: Create a list of songs that will be played on your radio (include the running time). These must match your target audience. (minimum of 10)

If yours is not a music show then you must include a list of people you will be interviewing or topics that you could talk about in future shows.

STEP SIX: When you have decided which Radio Station your show will be broadcast on you will then need to find the slot it will be placed in. You will have to explain to the Radio Station why this is a good position for your show and how it will engage the listeners at this point in the schedule.
