The Lego Movie: Introduction

The Lego Movie

As part of your GCSE Media exam, you will need to study The Lego Movie's industry and audience. Below are some questions designed to introduce you to the topic.

TASK: Use the internet to discover the answers to the following questions; ensure you write down the questions or answer in full sentences in your book. Below is a good website to begin with.

  1. When was The Lego Movie released?
  2. What are the names of the production companies who produced it (at least two)?
  3. How much did the film cost to be produced?
  4. How much gross profit did it make?
  5. Who conceived the idea to create the film, The Lego Movie?
  6. Who wrote and directed the film and what other major films have they been involved with?
  7. Which company distributed the film?
  8. Which organisation provides 'age ratings' to films in the UK?
  9. Which organisation 'age rates' video games in the UK?
  10. Write down a list of cast members and their respective characters.

TASK 2: Intertextuality is used heavily throughout the film to appeal to a wide audience of different ages and interests. Make a list of all the intertextual references in the film by using film posters and trailers as the basis for this.

Intertextuality: when one media texts refers to another, e.g.: The Simpsons featuring Family Guy characters.

TASK 3: For each intertextual reference, try to identify the audience for that character or icon. Who would be aware of that character?

TASK 4: When you have all the above information, answer the following questions:

  1. Why do you think the Lego Movie was so successful?
  2. How did the film appeal to a wide audience? Refer to specific details within the film and explain your reasons.
  3. The Lego Movie soon released a Video Game after the film; why do you think this is? Give two reasons.
TASK 5: The following are a list of key terms we will be using throughout this GCSE topic. Research what they are by looking online; you must ensure their meaning can be related to the Film Industry or Film Audience. Write these terms down with their definitions in your books (if unsure, speak to me).
